A LIVING COLLECTION OF COZY, SLOWED-DOWN WONDER
FallMagic
Summer is full — busy in the way that makes you feel alive.
The holidays have their own beautiful chaos coming.
Fall is the good in-between.
The days get shorter, the calendar loosens its grip, and you take one small step toward slow. I asked what made fall feel magical, and the answer was never the money. It was warm laundry. A blanket on the floor. Soft light. Somebody reading just one more chapter.
We are the
magic makers.
THE SECRET BEHIND EVERY MAGICAL FALL
The Magic-Maker Moves
Almost none of your memories cost a thing. Nobody wrote about the big fall trip — you wrote about warm towels and a movie in a pile of pillows. The magic was never the money. It was the yes, and in fall, the yes is usually slower.
Add one small twist
Dinner becomes magic the second it moves to a blanket by a fire pit. Cocoa becomes magic with too many marshmallows. Change one ordinary thing — not the whole day.
Cozy it up
The days are getting shorter, and after a go-go-go summer this is the exhale. Pull out all the soft blankets, recharge every battery candle and lamp — comfort is the activity.
Make it a ritual
One repeated thing beats ten one-offs — kids feel it coming. Friday football. Sunday chili. The same movie-and-popcorn night. Predictable magic is still magic.
Build the kit so you can be spontaneous
When the blanket’s already in the trunk and the cider’s already in the pantry, “yes” is the easy answer.
Protect the do-nothing day
The whole point of fall. The empty, pajama-long morning is where imagination actually happens. Boredom is the doorway to magic. Guard it.
Emily’sFall Rules
- Hang the small decorations. A few little things and the whole house says the season turned.
- Electric candles everywhere. I love the battery ones — they glow all season with zero worry about fire around the littles.
- Big lights off — it’s lamp o’clock. Lamp light just feels cozier.
- Say yes to a slow morning. There’s room on the calendar now.
- It’s soup season, and chili is my whole personality. The background noise of fall is always a football game.
- Chase the sunset. Earlier dark just means earlier cozy.
THE HEART OF FALL
You don’t need a project. You need a few small shifts that make walking into your own house feel like a hug. One of you said it best: “Getting off the school bus and seeing everything decorated was my favorite.” That feeling — walking in and it’s cozy now — that’s the whole thing.
- A few small decorations you actually love — the little pumpkins, the garland. Here’s my whole decorations list.
- Electric candles where you gather most — mantel, table, the kids’ rooms.
- The blanket basket by the couch, restocked for the season — this one’s the coziest, a dupe for that very expensive blanket everyone’s talking about.
- Overheads off, lamps and candlelight on, once the sun drops.
- Everything else on my ShopMy — all my fall faves in one place.
“My mom put cute little decorations on the windows and mirrors for every season — I LOVED them.”
“Sitting in a room with only the soft lights on. I used to sit there for hours.”
IN YOUR WORDS
The little things you loved
I asked what made fall feel like magic. Almost none of it cost a thing. Here’s what you said — steal any of them.
“Sitting in a room with only the soft lights on. I used to sit there for hours.”
“Popcorn and green apples for dinner on Sunday nights, and a movie.”
“My mom decorated our whole house for Halloween — even the bathroom. I loved it.”
Warm laundry dumped on the bed — to fold, and to get buried in.
The “great pumpkin” flashlight hunt in the yard after dark.
Cocoa in a thermos to go watch the sunset.
- The first fire of the year, everyone in socks.
- The smell of something apple in the oven.
- A blanket pallet on the living room floor for movie night.
- Cider that’s still too hot to drink.
- Orange-and-black sprinkles on the morning oatmeal.
- The fall book basket that only comes out now.
- One more chapter, read under the blanket.
- Chili on the stove all afternoon.
- Football on, nowhere you have to be.
- Saying “rabbit, rabbit” on the first of the month.
- Jumping in the pile you just spent an hour raking.
- Coming in cold to a warm, low-lit room.

The Cozy Fall Playlist
Half of “cozy” is a sound. Put this on while the chili simmers, while you decorate, on the slow Sunday morning. Same songs every year, and the kids will start to feel fall the second it comes on — predictable magic.

EARLIER DARK, EARLIER COZY
Chase the sunset.
The sun sets earlier now — so make the sunset the event instead of mourning it.
Chase the sun
In summer the sun set so late we’d stay up well past bedtime just to watch it go down. Now you can chase the sunset the easy way — grab a picnic blanket, bring dinner, and watch it set together.
Earlier wonder
Lay on the lawn and look for the first stars. A porch-light bonfire. A flashlight walk around the block before bath.
Then come in
Back to the cozy you already made. The contrast — cold cheeks, warm room — is the magic.

10 MIN + DRY
Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
Mix cinnamon + applesauce into a dough, cut shapes, poke a hole, air-dry a few days. The whole house smells like fall.
5 MIN
Cozy Indoor Picnic
Blanket on the living room floor, regular dinner, a fall movie. “My mom set up a picnic on the living room floor and we watched a movie.”

Not the whole holiday — just the low-lift magic.
Decorate the house inside too. “Even the bathroom. I loved it.”
Orange & black sprinkles on the morning oatmeal.
A “great pumpkin” flashlight hunt in the yard after dark.
One neighborhood gather — “the whole cul-de-sac, and one dad always dressed as a ghoul.”
